In memoriam Prof. DI Eva Ulmer-Janes
![]() |
It is with deep sadness that we announce that the long-time chairperson of the VdFS board, Prof. DI Eva Ulmer-Janes, died on Friday, 12 May 2023 after a long and sometimes difficult time. Eva Ulmer-Janes was a member of the Austrian Filmdesigners Association (VÖF) and represented the interests of the professional group of costume designers on the board of VdFS from 1995 to 2013. She was a particularly endearing colleague who was highly esteemed among filmmakers and who worked for the interests of our society with the greatest commitment, for which we cannot thank her enough. Our thoughts are with her and her family!

Diagonale'23
At this year's edition of the Diagonale, the festival of Austrian film, VdFS was once again a guest in Graz as a partner and sponsor. As part of the opening, the Diagonale Grand Acting Award was awarded in cooperation with the VdFS (Große Diagonale Schauspielpreis). This year, the wonderful Margarethe Tiesel was honoured for her services to Austrian film culture. Well deserved! Of course, we also congratulate all the other Diagonale 2023 award winners. VdFS is pleased to sponsor the Diagonale Acting Awards as well as the Diagonale Awards for Picture Design, Film Editing, Production Design, Costume Design and Sound Design. In this way, Austrian filmmaking is honoured and awarded. An overview of all winners can be found here. We congratulate very much! |
As every year, we also support young Austrian filmmakers by inviting 20 students from Austrian universities (with a focus on film) and 6 start-up scholarship holders from the BMKÖS (working scholarship for visual arts, architecture, design, photography, media art) to Graz to participate in the Diagonale and to network and exchange ideas with industry colleagues. 2023 was the last Diagonale festival year for the two current festival directors Sebastian Höglinger and Peter Schernhuber. We look back on 8 great festival performances and thank them for the great partnership and cooperation over the past years!

One evening for Daniela
On 23/03/2022 we remembered Daniela Padalewski-Gerber with a special evening at the Metrokino with family, friends, colleagues and companions.
After numerous postponements due to the pandemic, the evening for Daniela could finally take place. Kristina Sprenger, Maria Anna Kollmann and Fabian Eder led through the evening. The movie 'Der Narr von Wien' (John Goldschmidt, 1982) was shown, for which Daniela was responsible for the editing. With a small buffet and drinks the evening found a nice ending for Daniela.
Daniela was the longest serving board member of VdFS, representing the mandate film editing from the beginning - until her completely unexpected death on 27/03/2020. She was for many years chairwoman of the Austrian Association Film Editing aea and always engaged in the Dachverband der Filmschaffenden. For the entire film industry, this loss was and is difficult. Therefore, it was a pleasure for us to come together and commemorate our dear colleague and friend.

Online-Petition
We ask for your support and ask you to sign and spread the following online petition!
On September 2, 2021, the official draft of the Ministry of Justice for the UrhG Amendment 2021 was sent out for review.
Measured against the working papers of the Ministry of Justice from December 2020 and the implementation of the EU Internal Market Directive 2019 in five Member States - especially Germany - which has already taken place, this official draft unfortunately represents a significant step backwards.
Creators in general and filmmakers in particular should be protected, especially on the important issues of
- Liability of the major online platforms (YouTube, Facebook, etc.) and the participation of artists in revenues, as well as
- Copyright contract law (protective provisions for authors and performers against unilaterally disadvantageous contract clauses, entitlement to appropriate and proportionate remuneration, possibility of being represented by representative associations, etc.).
are massively disadvantaged in comparison to their German colleagues.
VdFS, coordinator of the Copyright Contract Law Initiative (Initiative Urhebervertragsrecht), demands the same level of protection in the implementation of the UrhG Amendment 2021 in Austria as in Germany!
Please sign the following online petition.
This will only take a few minutes of your time.
Your vote counts!

We thank you for your assistance and will keep you informed about further developments!

Diagonale 2021
"Endlich wieder Kino, endlich wieder Festival!"
It was a special pleasure for VdFS to be back in Graz as a partner of the Diagonale 2021 after almost two years. During the opening of the festival, in cooperation with VdFS, the Großer Diagonale Schauspielpreis for services to Austrian film culture was awarded this year to the great Christine Ostermayer. We congratulate her! All other award winners of the Diagonale'21 should not go unmentioned. We are once again pleased to be the sponsor of the Diagonale Acting Awards as well as the Diagonale Awards for Picture Design, Film Editing, Production Design, Costume Design and Sound Design, and in this way to highlight and honor the achievements of Austrian filmmakers. An overview of all winners can be found here. We congratulate all winners of the Diagonale'21.

Initiative copyright contract law
VdFS supports the proposals and concerns of the © Initiative Urhebervertragsrecht. The Initiative Urhebersvertragsrecht (Copyright Contract Law Initiative) is an association of Austrian artists' associations (authors and performing artists) founded in 2020, which is committed to improving the legal framework in the area of copyright (contract) law and collecting society law in Austria. This is not only, but above all, also with regard to the upcoming amendment of the Copyright Act within the framework of the UrhG Amendment 2021. In the course of this amendment, the provisions of the Single Market Directive of the European Union from 2019 are to be implemented. Beyond the mandatory requirements of the directive, the initiative is developing further proposals to strengthen the typically weaker negotiating position of creators vis-à-vis their contractual partners (publishers, labels, film producers, broadcasters, other users) and to improve the remuneration situation of artists |
The Initiative Copyright Contract Law represents the interests of more than 300,000 creators in Austria - writers, translators, composers, performing musicians, filmmakers, actors, visual artists and many other authors and performers. For the upcoming amendment of the Copyright Act (UrhG-Novelle 2021), the Initiative has drafted a legislative proposal for the implementation of the requirements of the 2019 Single Market Directive of the European Union for the protection of authors and performers in Austria (copyright contract law). Furthermore, with regard to the upcoming UrhG Amendment 2021, the initiative also submits proposals for new claims to adequate remuneration (statutory remuneration claims).

In Memoriam Daniela Padalewski-Gerber (1955-2020)We are deeply saddened, stunned. We have lost a kind, humorous person, a friend. And with Daniela we lose a committed fighter for the strengthening of editors in this country. As a long-time chairwoman of the Austrian Association of Film Editors (AEA), at VdFS and in other committees, Daniela always stood up for filmmakers with diplomacy, patience and success. What we will keep forever is the memory of you and your services to the creative people of the film industry. Daniela, we thank you and we miss you. Our thoughts are with you and your family. |
